Phormium tenax purpurea

Grows large robust clumps of broad, sword-shaped, stiffly ascending red/purple/brown leaves . It is extremely tolerant of wind and can take coastal exposure as well as severe freezes.  Generally smaller in stature than the green form. It is best planted alongside shrubs with lighter colouring.  Attractive to birds and insects. Suitable for hedging and shelter as well as restorative and riparian planting.
